Yokahoma (May 29, 1945)

Today we bombed Yokohama. The smoke rose to about 19,000 feet. We saw some flack and only two fighters. Bombs Away: 11:00, Land: 17:00.

— Joe Caner Swann

This raid took fire bombing to the Yokahama Urban Area. Four bomb wings sent 510 aircraft which flew in tighter formations at 17,500-21,000 feet. This was a late evening attack (10:15-11:30 pm).

Over 2,500 lbs. of incendiaries were delivered to the target (about 12,000 lbs. per plane). In spite of 9/10 cloud coverage about 6.9 square miles of the target was destroyed.

The bombing force encountered 110 attacks from 55 enemy fighters. One B-29 was intentionally rammed by an enemy fighter. Six enemy aircraft were destroyed, with five more probably destroyed, and ten damaged. Antiaircraft fire was heavy and brought down three aircraft.

The B-29s were escorted by 101 P-51s. Two of these were lost over the target.

Seven aircraft did not return from this mission and thirty-nine more landed at Iwo Jima.
