Tachiari (March 27, 1945)

We bombed an air field near Tachiarai on the Island of Kyushu. No fighters or flack. We flew our first dumbo and had a very easy time. We saw two Jap ships that our sub was after.

— Joe Caner Swann

This mission was a return to high altitude bombing (14,500-18,000 feet) as all the ordinance for fire bombing had been used up. The overall mission involved 161 aircraft and went to three different targets in the Kyushu area: the Tachiariand Oita Airfields and the Omura Aircraft Factory. The Star Duster's crew was assigned the Tachiari Airfield.

This was a midday attack (11:40 am-12:00 pm) with good weather. The Tachiari Airfield suffered 606,500 square feet of damage. The group assigned to this target encountered ineffective antiaircraft fire and 21 fighter attacks. The crews assigned to the other two targets had similar experiences.

All planes returned safely.
