We started to Nagoya but we lost an engine. All planes returned safely.
— Joe Caner Swann
This mission sent 117 aircraft of the 73rd and 313th Bomb Wings to the Mitsubishi Engine Plant in Nagoya. The force encountered severe weather en route which cause formations to break up. Sixteen planes returned early. The target was attacked during the 3:00 pm hour from 25,000-34,000 feet. The planes carried 5,000-6,000 lbs. of bombs.
The weather was reasonably clear over the target but only 33 planes bombed the primary target destroying 203,000 square feet (5.4%) of roof area. An additional 54 planes bombed Hamamatsu as a last resort. Around 2 million square feet of this target was destroyed.
The enemy responded with some antiaircraft fire and weak fighter opposition (only 166 attacks). Eight fighters were destroyed, with seven proabales, and twenty-three damaged.
One B-29 ditched on the return trip.
