Iwo Jima Pictures
These pictures were taken at Iwo Jima when the Star Duster made stops there to fly navigational escort for the P-51s. When Iwo Jima was captured the U.S. finally had an air base close enough to provide fighter support for the B-29s on their raids against Japan. However, the P-51s had limited navigational equipment so three B-29s had to fly navigational escort for the P-51s to get them to and from Japan.
